Toyota Kirloskar Motor is all set to launch its fourth-generation Prius early in January 2017. The company has already revealed this new hybrid model at Toyota Caravan for Environment-Friendly Technology and Safety event that was held recently in New Delhi. The fourth-generation Prius is expected to come with a price tag between Rs 30 lakh and 40 lakh.
Under the hood, this all new Toyota Prius will be powered by an Atkinson Cycle 4-cylinder petrol engine with 1.8-litre capacity. The engine is going to produce a torque of 142 Nm and power of 95 hp. This is going to be further complimented by the presence of a permanent magnet AC Synchronous electric motor that is going to produce 71 hp of power and 121 Nm of torque. The battery for the Prius model for India is going to be a Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) unit. This one of a kind combination will also be paired with an Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (e-CVT) unit which will improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle by about 10% over the previous generation Prius model. The company claims that the new generation Prius is going to have a robust fuel economy of about 40.1 kmpl.
2017 Prius is going to be the first production car that will be based on Toyota’s all new Toyota New Global Architecture or TNGA platform that is going to feature a chassis that has been stiffened by almost 60% to guarantee a highly engaging drive experience. This sedan is much bigger in size than its previous model. It measures 4,540 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width and 1,470 mm in height. However, the wheelbase has been kept the same at 2,700 mm just like the 3rd generation model. The fourth-generation Prius also boasts of some cool robust features outside which include triangular fog lamps, sharp lines on its bonnet, new swept-back headlamps as well as a brand new set of sleek alloy wheels.
The insides of the Toyota fourth generation Prius is also equipped with some great features such as a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, a centrally-mounted touchscreen infotainment system that is much larger than its old model, an automatic climate control along with a colored heads-up display (HUD). When it comes to safety, this upcoming hybrid sedan is going to have airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution). Like its previous model, the Toyota Prius will be made available as a CBU or a Completely Built-up Unit. However, there is strong indication that the company might actually start assembling this car for the Indian market at a later period.
